Launching a New Term

I recently coined the term “Helipad Parent” in an effort to enrich and enliven our nation’s conversation about what constitutes reasonable and effective parenting.

“I may be a crappy helicopter parent, but I make a decent helipad.”

In a nutshell, a helipad parent takes a different approach than the much-talked about helicopter parent. Helipad parents aren’t well-suited to hovering over their children’s daily decisions. Instead, they 1) strive to provide a safe landing in times of trouble—a helipad—and 2) hope to launch confident kids into the world by empowering them to take control of their own lives.
